When it became clear that some of the teens in our programs were not ready for the freedom of their own apartments, we added continuing care programs, which are based in group home settings. As the number of NAFFCCA programs has grown, so has the number of teens we serve. Today, there are over 100 teens in the various NAFFCCA foster care programs.
Support in achieving educational and employment goals is a component of any good foster care program for teens. The first NAFFCCA business was started in 2001 when we realized how much support some of our youth needed to stay employed.
Over the years, many of the young adults who were once in our programs have stayed in touch. Some call or stop by just to say hello. Others call when they need help finding a job or a place to live or just someone to talk to. We also hear from young people who were once in foster care but not in NAFFCCA programs. Many of these young adults are having trouble making it on their own and are looking for help. We did what we could to help them, and as their numbers grew we formalized our support by creating an after foster care program.
Through this program, young adults previously in foster care are able to get help with employment and education and participate in our GED program. We also have subsidized housing available for young men who need a place to stay.
